Demo Abstract: RemoteHap: Enabling Haptic Exploration of Distant 3D Objects
Current imaging and networking technologies facilitate the visual display of distant objects; however, remote displays typically suffer from a lack of haptic feedback. Here, we introduce RemoteHap, a haptic rendering system that enables its users to explore and perceive distant 3D objects through the sense of touch. RemoteHap can render the shape, stiffness, and surface texture of a distant object by integrating data from a remote robot equipped with optical and acoustic sensors. We developed a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of our system design.
