Christian Paguyuban: Toward an Indonesian Missional Church
This article examines the challenges of fostering a missional church within Indonesian Christianity, particularly addressing the influence of individualism. The article aims to provide practical insights for Indonesian churches seeking to overcome the obstacles of individualism and embrace a missional identity rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Paguyuban. Recognizing the limitations of individualistic tendencies in embracing a communal, outward-focused missional identity, the article explores the concept of “Christian Paguyuban” as a potential solution. Drawing upon its historical roots, cultural significance, and core principles of community, shared identity, and collective action, the authors argue that “Christian Paguyuban” offers a relevant and contextually appropriate model for Indonesian churches. By integrating the values and practices of Paguyuban, the article suggests that churches can cultivate a stronger sense of belonging, foster a shared purpose, and empower members to actively participate in missional activities.
