Submission in A Christian Marriage: A Covenant of Grace Viewpoint
The article aims to explore and present different views on submission in Christian marriages, including complementarian and feminist perspectives. It advocates for embracing the covenant of grace approach, which emphasizes mutual respect, partnership, and communion between spouses, reflecting the relationship between Christ and the church. In this article, I argue that the concept of submission in Christian marriages, when understood within the covenant of grace viewpoint, dignifies, empowers, and protects women to be equally active as heirs with their husbands of the gracious gift of life. Rather than solely focusing on the act of submission, the church should emphasize God's grace through Christ and the union resembling Christ and the church. This approach promotes a more respectful attitude that values the dignity of both spouses. I will critically assess the arguments presented by feminist Melissa Reid, who posits that submission fosters inequality, passivity, and oppression. I will also examine the views of those Reid references in her article and critically evaluate these perspectives through the lens of the covenant of grace, highlighting the importance of embracing this viewpoint in contemporary Christian marriages.
