Real Case Study Showcasing a New Model to Manage Integrated Projects by Advanced Level of Remote Operations Along with Multi-Skilling Field Crew While Incorporating Digital Technologies and Automation Enablers

Abstract As technology develops rapidly, petroleum industry needs to utilize these to develop operational models to limit personnel travelling to high HS&E risk rigsite area to relatively safe controlled remote operation centers. Traditional manning is not effective anymore. CO2 emissions has reached alarming levels leading to global warming. This paper describes one innovative operating model which encompasses multi-skilled field crew, remote operations using digital and technology enablers. Detailed description focused on different case studies. An Integrated Multiservice model was developed. Step one was an in-depth risk assessment of the project. Next prepared RACI matrix for all personal involved in project either at rigsite or office. All tasks traditionally performed by service company engineer were analyzed, then identified which tasks need physical presence of engineer at the rigsite and which tasks can be performed remotely from remote operations center. Depending on location of crew - rigsite or remote center specific competency development plan was prepared. This led to forming Multiskilled service company crew at the rigsite- Field Professional (FPRO) who could now perform all physical tasks across all operations which reduced additional resources needed to travel during change in operations. It led to relocating set of skilled engineers at the remote operations center to execute the non-physical tasks. Field escalation process was developed to streamline the process and avoid communication barriers. Statement of requirement for connectivity to rig infrastructure for communication were defined. To test the robustness of the model it was implemented across different geographies (North Sea, Middle East and Latin America). Tested over different environments (onshore and offshore). Implementation on each project was successful. Lesson learnt from each project was shared across other projects improving overall service delivery. Successful transition of up to 50% tasks from rigsite to remote center was possible. POB reduction up to 67% was achieved in one case. Ability for one offshore customer to do SIMOPS (Simultaneous Operations) on old platform with POB issues was huge cost saving. North Sea customers experiencing frequent bad weather conditions benefitted from avoiding rig shutdown waiting on service company crew as operations were managed through remote center. FPRO were supported by Drilling contractor personal and remote professionals operating from remote center. One team mindset is the secret for the model's success. All 3 stakeholders (Operating company, Drilling Contractor & Service company) worked together with a common purpose. Operators are now requesting to further optimize this model to gain more value. The next stage would cross train drilling contractor personal. Utilizing automation software in Drilling, fluid monitoring and cementing would drive further standardization and alignment with overall project objectives. This model is a stepping change in how operations will take place in future.
