A Step-Change Initiative to Offset the Reduction of CO2 for Greenhouse Gases

Abstract Objective and Scope In alignment with the Petroleum Development Oman's PDO commitment to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, with an interim target of a 50% reduction by 2030, the Company has initiated the "Decarbonation Road Map" aimed at positioning Oman as a leader in clean energy development and GHG emissions reduction. One of the key initiatives contributing to the global goal of reducing GHG emissions is the deployment of Mobile Sewage Treatment Plants (MSTPs) at for camp sites, replacing conventional soak away and septic tanks. Methods, Procedures, Process This project involves the implementation of standalone/mobile STP units, effectively addressing issues related to sewage management, reducing CO2 emissions, minimizing road exposure, and eliminating the need for sewage trucking. Furthermore, in alignment with PDO's dedication to sustainability, the Company has actively participated in the National Initiative for Plantation of 10 million Trees, utilizing Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) to plant approximately 3,800 trees per location (totaling 95,000 trees across 25 locations). Results, Observations, Conclusions The implementation of this initiative is anticipated to yield numerous benefits, including but not limited to: Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE): The Company's primary focus is on eliminating potential risks associated with traffic exposure and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Through the comprehensive initiative, the objective is to eliminate instances of non-compliance related to road incidents, sewage overflow, harm to animals and birds due to sewage discharge, as well as violations of pollution standards for isolating underground aquifers. Additionally, efforts will enhance welfare provisions for crews, reinforcing the Company's commitment to their well-being. Furthermore, emphasis on the Company's commitment towards environmental biodiversity.Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reduction: The initiative places strong emphasis on minimizing CO2 emissions, specifically targeting greenhouse gases. By eliminating vacuum trucks and implementing plantation coverage, a substantial reduction of approximately 97,525 CO2 metric tons per year in CO2 emissions is anticipated. This reduction aligns with the Company's commitment towards environmental sustainability and proactive approach to mitigating climate change impacts.Cost Optimization: In addition to environmental benefits, the initiative offers significant cost advantages. The projected cost reduction is estimated $5.5 million/year as a result of eliminating the need for vacuum trucks, optimizing sewage system construction, operation and maintenance, and avoiding non-productive time during site restoration. Adopting such optimized processes and implementing efficient solutions will result in a streamlined operation, minimizing unnecessary expenses, and enhancing overall cost-effectiveness. Novel/Additive Information Replacing septic and soak away tanks with Mobile STPs shall directly reduce the carbon footprint by address environmental challenges such as sewage overflow, CO2 emissions, and pollution associated with transportation exposure. The initiative not only resolves sewage overflow issues but also contributes to CO2 emission reduction by eliminating sewage trucking and minimizing road exposure, thus reducing the carbon footprint. Moreover, replacing outdated sewage systems mitigates the risk of soil and water contamination, preserving local ecosystems and safeguarding nearby water sources.
