Multi-Scale Fracture Modeling and its Application: A Case Study of the Zhaotong Shale Gas Demonstration Area in Southern China
Abstract The study area has been influenced by multiple phases of tectonic movements, resulting in complex geological structures characterized by fractures of various phases interweaving and embedding. This complexity has led to suboptimal outcomes in shale gas fracturing development. To accurately describe the fracture systems in the study area, this paper employs a multi-scale fracture modeling approach based on the comprehensive application of multidisciplinary data, including geophysics, geology, logging, and geomechanics. We established a three-dimensional model of natural fractures at three scales: seismic Facies fractures, discrete fractures, and diffuse fractures. This model was validated using imaging logging, drilling data, and microseismic monitoring of hydraulic fracturing. The model can be effectively used for the integrated analysis of drilling mud loss, fracturing operations, and productivity testing, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of fracturing operations and supporting the efficient development of shale gas in the study area.
