Hybrid Design Stabilizer/Reamer Helps Driving Drilling Efficiencies in Unconventional Non-Reservoir Vertical Applications in KSA
Abstract Drilling a well is a costly process with a high element of risk that requires strict monitoring. Given the high-cost environment, introducing new techniques and innovative technology to high-profile offshore, or remote operations is often more feasible and financially viable for both consumer and provider. Such an exercise is more challenging for comparatively low-cost non-reservoir applications similar to that of rotary bottom hole assemblies (BHAs) used in vertical drilling operations. Hence, the introduction of clever yet relatively simple technology and solutions serving improved well economics is highly desirable. New complex smart downhole tools and technology typically come with a comparatively hefty price tag. Furthermore, adding components to the BHA will automatically result in increasing the bottom line. Therefore, the primary approach was to replace existing components such as stabilizers and/or roller reamers with a design that offers similar functionality with superior efficiency. A similar innovative device was identified and an initiative was started in order to evaluate this new Efficient Design Stabilizer (EDS) in the 12″ hole section as a starting point. After ascertaining representative offset wells offering a reliable benchmark, a suitable well was then selected for the introduction of the EDS. The idea was to swap out the conventional design stabilizers or roller reamer with the novel design in a packed rotary BHA. A set of clear key performance indicators (KPIs) were also required in order to ensure a qualitative evaluation. The collation and comparison of the standard drilling parameters produced very encouraging findings. There were noticeable improvements across hydraulics data, mechanics as well as performance data compared to the best offset. Moreover, the introduction of the EDS did not pose any new risks to the operation. The objectives of maintaining verticality were likewise successfully accomplished. Correspondingly, the subsequent casing run proved trouble-free and smooth. These favourable outcomes were really promising, providing the confidence to pursue utilizing the new design tools, and further introduce them to other hole sections. This paper details the selection process of the EDS and provides a thorough description of the new design features and benefits of the adopted design after specifying well, BHA, and the nature of the application. An analysis of the acquired data is then presented and explained. Finally, the results and gains are summarized and quantified. The avant-garde archetype of the EDS adheres to the recommended stabilizer selection criteria and guidelines by design and addresses known shortcomings of conventional design stabilizers and roller reamers that are yet widely accepted by the industry. As such, the new design challenges the status quo and offers a cutting-edge substitute for roller reamers and conventional stabilizers better suited for 21st century demands.
