Innovations in Downhole Monitoring Technologies and Applications: Seismic Exploration with Real-Time Hybrid Coiled Tubing Technology and DAS VSP Driving Sustainable Progress
The ongoing transition towards sustainable energy sources is driving operators to explore renewable energy solutions. "Green" or renewable energy sources are characterized by their ability to regenerate at a rate equal to or greater than their rate of consumption, ensuring a continuous supply without exhausting natural reserves, and significantly reducing environmental impact. Geothermal energy stands out as a promising renewable resource that can significantly reduce dependence on conventional hydrocarbons such as oil and gas. Although natural gas is sometimes labeled as the cleaner hydrocarbon, geothermal energy is a more sustainable and renewable option. This resource has a potential to generate both electricity, where reservoir temperatures exceeding 100°C can produce steam, and heating through low-temperature geothermal systems. Low-temperature geothermal systems are more accessible compared to their high-temperature counterparts, and offer significant potential for applications such as district heating and the provision of domestic and industrial hot water. However, the challenge lies in optimizing the sustainability of these operations and minimizing the risk of unsuccessful exploration, particularly in identifying the geological formations capable of matching the project’s objectives.
