Unlocking Efficiency and Safety in Offshore Operations; Vessel Motion Based Criteria (VMBC) Methodology and Digital Tools for Enhanced Decision-Making

Abstract Objectives/Scope The Vessel Motion Based Criteria (VMBC) methodology is a novel approach used in offshore operations to assess operational feasibility based on vessel motion parameters. This paper presents new insights into the integration of the VMBC methodology with digital tools, offering a transformative approach to offshore operational decision-making. Our paper aims to a) present the VMBC methodology and its integration with digital tools and b) demonstrate tangible advantages of the integrated approach through a real-life case study. Methods, Procedures, Process Operational feasibility has been assessed based on time domain simulations using state-of-the-art simulation models of a relevant offshore construction activity. Analysis encompassed data from a real offshore operation. The comprehensive dataset included hindcast data comprising 3-hour directional wave spectra, tabulated weather data, vessel motion data, and measured wave data. This forms the basis for establishing accurate operability. The dataset is then compared with traditional approaches for operability determination (limited to sea state parameters) and the novel approach of utilizing the VMBC methodology. This comparative analysis highlights the advantages of employing VMBC methodology for enhanced operational decision-making in offshore environments. Results, Observations, Conclusions In summary, this paper presents the Vessel Motion Based Criteria (VMBC) methodology and its seamless integration with advanced digital tools. We discuss the fundamental principles of VMBC, emphasizing the task of finding a balanced correlation between product response and vessel motion parameter. Highlighting the limitations of traditional methods based on sea state limitations, our case study underscores the challenges in simulating representative sea conditions, particularly in regions affected by multi-component seas. The VMBC approach emerges as a promising solution and our paper sheds light on the untapped potential of a more accurate determination of operational feasibility. Lastly, our focus extends to the pivotal role of digital tools in standardizing and streamlining operability assessments. By automating significant portions of operational assessments, these tools free up valuable time for offshore crews, enabling them to focus on critical tasks. The result of this integrated approach is presented through a real use case, offering opportunities for more accurate determinations enabling reduced waiting on weather and safer operations. Novel/Additive Information In offshore operations, including exploration, construction and support activities, the need for precise and reliable weather forecasting and assessment is paramount. Currently, significant time and resources are spent waiting on weather, leading to delays, inefficiencies, increased risks, and unnecessary emissions. By optimizing planning and execution processes, enhanced models in combination with digital tools have the potential to unlock safer, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly operations.
