Dxa Confirmed Improvements In Body Composition In Healthy Adults Over 1-year: Documenting Muscle Mass Gains With Concurrent Fat Mass Loss
Title: DXA Confirmed Improvements in Body Composition in Healthy Adults Over 1-Year: Documenting Muscle Mass Gains with Concurrent Fat Mass Loss. Authors: Donny Gregg1,2, David T Martin1,3, Eitan Gelber1Institutions:1 Apeiron Life, Menlo Park, CA, United States2 San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA, United States3 Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, VIC Australia PURPOSE: Examine three types of body composition changes in healthy adults over 1 yr: 1) Reduced body fat and muscle mass (REDUCE), 2) Increased body fat and muscle mass (GAIN) and 3) increased muscle mass with concurrent loss in body fat (RECOMP). DESIGN: Multiple DXA scans were performed on a group of healthy adults (n = 70). Changes in Fat Mass (FM) and Fat Free Mass (FFM) were used to establish unique groups. METHODS: Each participant was supported by an exercise specialist, a registered dietician, and logistical support. A single DXA technician using one Horizon DXA system over the entire study period. RESULTS: Of the 70 participants, 14 (20%) were able to achieve gains in muscle mass while losing body fat. Muscle mass gains over ~1 year were similar in the GAIN group compared to the REMODEL group (0.39lbs/m vs 0.34lbs/m, P > .05) and fat mass loss was similar in the REDUCE compared to the REMODEL group (-0.77 lb/m vs -0.57 lb/m, P > .05). CONCLUSION: Body recomposition requires a tremendous amount of effort and support but results show it is still possible. There was a variety of approaches to each participant. Common themes of intervention were physical testing, education, wearable technology, accountability, and goal setting. - Total REDUCE GAIN Recomposition Age (y) 57.4 ± 9.9 57.2 ± 8.8 52.0 ± 10.4 63.6 ± 11.9 Male 58 25 8 13 Female 12 5 2 1 Fat Δ (%) - -10.1 ± 5.8 +10.3 ± 9.4 -7.2 ± 3.5 Fat Δ (lb/mo) - -0.77 ± 0.77 +0.37 ± 0.40 -0.57 ± 0.53 FFM Δ (%) - -3.3 ± 3.7 +3.6 ± 2.8 +2.0 ± 1.1 FFM Δ (lb/mo) - -0.34 ± 0.38 +0.39 ± .40 +0.34 ± 0.23 Time (mo) - 11.6 ± 7.3 15.0 ± 11.5 8.6 ± 3.8
