MELAS syndrome and risk of infection
This perspective explores the relationship between mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome and an increased risk of infections. Mitochondrial dysfunction impairs immune cell function, impacting the body’s defense against pathogens. Additional effects on the immune system may manifest through altered B-cell function and disruptions in the gut microbiota balance. The complex connection between infections, MELAS symptoms, and treatment complicates patient management. We propose greater focus on genetic abnormalities and their immunologic impacts, indicating a possible path for targeted pharmaceutical therapies to improve overall illness management.
