Bilateral electricity-induced cataract with dissimilar morphology in a young electrician

This report documents a rare case of bilateral electricity-induced cataracts presenting with dissimilar morphology in each eye following an electrocution incident, underscoring the significance of recognizing electrical injury as a causative factor for varied cataract presentations. A 22-year-old electrician experienced decreased vision in his left eye 11 months post electrocution. A comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), slit-lamp examination, and ultrasonography, was conducted to assess the cataracts’ morphological characteristics. Uniquely, the patient presented with a posterior subcapsular cataract in the right eye and a milky white cataract with snowflake-like anterior subcapsular opacifications in the left eye, confirming the diagnosis of bilateral electricity-induced cataracts with dissimilar morphology. This case highlights the critical need for an exhaustive ophthalmological assessment in electrocution victims, facilitating the early detection and management of varied ocular complications, including diverse cataract morphologies.
