Apple of the eye – Conjunctival Implantation Cyst

Figure 1: Well-defined cystic lesion at nasal limbus- conjunctival implantation cystA 41-year-old gentleman presented to our clinic with a history of a gradually progressive painless mass on the inner aspect of the right eye for the last 13 years. On examination, there was a well-defined cystic lesion measuring 10 mm × 7 mm at the nasal limbus in the right eye [Fig. 1] with a pterygium in the left eye. The rest of the anterior and posterior segment examination was unremarkable with a visual acuity of 20/20 in both eyes. Intraocular extension and involvement of other ocular structures were ruled out on ultrasound biomicroscopy. A provisional diagnosis of conjunctival implantation cyst was made. The patient underwent an excision biopsy with a conjunctival autograft harvested from the same eye. The diagnosis of conjunctival implantation cyst was confirmed on histopathological examination of the specimen, which showed an epithelium-lined cyst under the conjunctival epithelium. A few inflammatory cells were also seen in the subconjunctival space, suggesting the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of the cyst.[1] On follow-up visits, the conjunctival autograft was taken up well and the patient maintained a stable ocular surface. Declaration of patient consent The authors certify that they have obtained all appropriate patient consent forms. In the form, the patient(s) has/have given his/her/their consent for his/her/their images and other clinical information to be reported in the journal. The patients understand that their names and initials will not be published and due efforts will be made to conceal their identity, but anonymity cannot be guaranteed.
