Toxoplasma retinitis in retinitis pigmentosa
A 21-year-old Indian female with bilateral retinitis pigmentosa presented with sudden-onset reduced vision in her left eye (LE) for 5 days. Her visual acuity was 20/300 in LE. LE retinal evaluation showed unifocal necrotizing retinitis at the macula [Fig. 1a]. She was diagnosed with toxoplasma retinitis in retinitis pigmentosa, with IgM and IgG for Toxoplasma being positive. Patient was put on treatment with oral corticosteroids and trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole for 6 weeks. After 4 weeks, her LE visual acuity improved to 20/125 with resolution of retinitis [Fig. 1b].Figure 1: (a) The left eye colour fundus photograph with predominant bony spicules in the mid-peripheral retina, attenuated blood vessels, overexposed optic disc, and yellowish white with fluffy margin of retinitis seen at the temporal aspect of the macula. Adjacent retinal hemorrhages are also noted. (b) The image of the left eye with resolved retinitis and localized posterior vitreous changes in the inferior aspect of the macula. The hemorrhages noted in Fig. 1a seem to have resolvedDeclaration of patient consent The authors certify that they have obtained all appropriate patient consent forms.
