Scleral buckling for retinal reattachment while retaining long-standing glass intraocular foreign bodies and review of literature
Intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) can cause significant visual morbidity. Management of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) with an IOFB can be challenging. We report a case of a retained glass IOFB for 27 years, with RD secondary to atrophic holes in a lattice. We opted for a conservative approach with scleral buckling for the RD, while leaving the IOFB undisturbed. As the foreign body was remote in location with respect to the RD and removal was likely to be traumatic, the IOFB was left in situ . A tailor-made approach for each case, with regular follow-up examinations, can yield optimum results.
