Development of a Peace Education Model Based on the Lives of Learners

Objectives This study aims to develop the model of a peace education that would enable learners to create and expand peace in their actual lives. Methods Based on the Groome’s educational approach, ‘life to Faith and Faith to Life,’ this research has developed a peace education model, designed programs, and conducted action research. I conducted a peace education pro-gram every week for the second semester of 2022 with 128 first-year students at a High School, a formal educa-tion site. Then, I implemented another peace education program in the first half of 2023 hosted by a Peace Center, a non-formal educational site, combining three sessions of real-time remote education and a peace camp for 2 nights and 3 days. Results I derived the 9R model by analyzing participants’ experiences and meanings through class observation and interviews. The elements of the 9R model are Round, Remind, Relate, Refer, Reason, Reflect, Revive, Request, and Recreate. By connecting these elements to the movement of education, one can recognize “current life (Round-Remind-Relate)”, internalize “deep knowledge(Refer-Reason-Reflect)”, and integrate “moving-forward life (Revive-Request-Recreate).” Conclusions With this process, peace can be actualized in the lives of learners. Hence I argue if the 9R model can be integrated into various educational fields, it will be possible to build a culture of peace that revives lives in soci-eties that are seeking peace.
