A Software Testbed for Developing the Energy Management System in Lecture Rooms Using IoT- based SCADA
Energy management systems are essential in reducing energy consumption in a building. It is one component of the Smart Grid system related to the demand side management. This paper presents a software testbed for developing energy management in lecture rooms. The proposed testbed is implemented using IoT-based SCADA software, which is designed for both the actual and simulation of the energy management system. The SCADA application for actual implementation runs on the Human Machine Interface (HMI) device, which is connected to the simulator that runs on a personal computer. In the simulation, two methods, Mode-1 and Mode-2, are evaluated for controlling the lamps in the lecture room. Mode-l controls all the lights in a room simultaneously, while Mode-2 controls individually according to occupants in the lamp's zone. The simulation results using the simulated data in lecture rooms during a week show that Mode-2 achieves an efficiency of 42.08% in energy consumption. Further, the results show that the proposed approach offers an efficient way of developing the IoT-based SCADA system for energy management.
