Carbon Nanohorns - PVP Nanocomposite As Sensing Layer For Resistive Humidity Monitoring: Preliminary Results

A novel nanocomposite layer comprising pristine carbon nanohorns (CNHs) and polyvinylpirrolidone (PVP) at 9/1 w/w ratio is reported as a relative humidity (RH) sensing layer employed in a RH detector comprising polyimide, as substrate, and gold, as interdigitated electrodes (IDTs). The structure of the sensing layer, deposited by means of the drop-casting method, is analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and RAMAN spectroscopy. Electrical measurements show that the resistance of the of the nanofilm increases for RH between 0% and 70% and for RH larger than 90%. For RH in the 70%-90% range, the resistance decreases with RH. The paper discusses several sensing mechanisms which might explain the measured RH detection behavior.

The paper discusses several sensing mechanisms which might explain the measured RH detection behavior.
