Facial measurements and temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis
Introduction: There are gaps in the knowledge of the relationships between facial asymmetry in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE-HS). Objective: To evaluate facial measurements and relationships with clinical variables in adults with TLE-HS. Methodology: The facial measurements of 49 patients with TLE-HS were related to clinical variables and compared to the values of individuals in the control group (CG). Results: There was a difference in the hemifaces and the labial philtrum between individuals with TLE-HS and CG. Abnormal neurological examination, number of antiseizure drugs, changes in background activity, and laterality of epileptiform activity (EA) and motor dominance were associated with facial asymmetry. A lower value of the right hemiface was associated with the left laterality of the EA. Conclusion: Facial measurement asymmetries were more frequent in TLE-HS. Facial asymmetry with lower values of the left hemiface was contralateral to EA. Minor physical anomalies in facial measurements were associated with clinical aspects of TLE-HS.
