Hybridity and Multilayeredness of Tradition and Modernity in the Modern Transition Period
This paper aims to analyze the main trends in the study of the modern transition period in Korean history during 2022-2023 and suggest directions for future research based on the results. Recent studies have focused on the hybridity of tradition and modernity and have attempted to examine the modern transition period from various perspectives. In particular, there has been an in-depth analysis of how traditional elements combined with modern institutions to create new historical currents. These studies are evaluated as an attempt to understand modernity as a complex historical phenomenon that occurred in interaction with pre-modern elements, rather than simply as a result of Western development.<br/> So, what kind of history does the hybridity of tradition and modernity in the transition period of modernity portray? First of all, it is expected that studies will continue to reveal that the Joseon and Korean empires did not completely exclude traditional elements in their pursuit of modernization, but rather utilized or mixed them, thus creating a hybrid of traditional and modern elements. In addition, studies that capture the complex and multilayered nature of the encounters between the Joseon and Korean empires and the rest of the world, rather than simply identifying them as a binary structure of aggression and resistance, are also expected to continue.
