Concentration within Continuity and Diversity in the Field of Modern Chinese History Research (2022-2023)

The purpose of this paper is to summarize, introduce, and critique the research achievements and trends in the field of modern Chinese history (1840-1911) in Korea from 2022 to 2023.
Although it might be somewhat challenging to assess the research situation of modern Chinese history over the past two years as a dramatic quantitative leap, it is certainly true that there has been quantitative growth compared to previous periods. From a quantitative perspective, there is a marked trend of concentration on social history and the history of Sino-Korean relations. Additionally, within specific subfields, there seems to be a noticeable concentration of research achievements on particular topics. This can be described as the manifestation of the so-called phenomenon of concentration within continuity and diversity.
What were once innovative and new research topics in the past now seem to have entered a stage of establishment. However, it appears problematic that achievements in core areas of modern history research have fallen into a lull. The expansion of research fields seems to occur in conjunction with the emergence of new generations of scholars, and continuous interest and effort from the academic community are necessary.
