Abstract

The United Nations (UN) recently launched the Decade of the Ocean for Sustainable Development, from 2021 to 2030, which is of great importance for the development of marine sciences and for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 14 - Protect Marine Life. Although it was an initiative of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 1992, the Blue Economy, or Blue Growth, is relevant to all coastal countries. This concept is associated with the concept of the Global Ocean, as a single, barrier-free ocean, and the concept of Sustainable Development, based on three inseparable pillars: economic development, environmental protection and social progress. This article presents the main concerns related to the Blue Economy, from a biological and environmental perspective, such as the sustainable use of biodiversity, food security, fisheries sustainability, climate change, marine and coastal tourism, pollution, and international governance and cooperation.
