Effect of Breathing Rate Change on Electroencephalogram Signal in Awake State
Recent studies have uncovered a close and intricate relationship between respiratory rhythms and electroencephalogram (EEG) activity. In this study, we developed an experimental paradigm during normal, quick and slow breathing pattern for obtaining EEG signals. The EEG signal acquisition device employed in this study is a 64-channel wireless EEG system (Named: NeuroSci). The processing of EEG signals was carried out using the EEGLAB toolbox in MATLAB. After filtering and independent component analysis, analysis of event-related potentials were performed. Within the first second (about 300ms) a positive potential rising rapidly to 5µV was observed, followed by a rapid decline to a negative potential of about 5µV. The amplitude among evoked potential of slow breathing was higher than that of fast breathing and normal breathing.
