A complete sojourn of recent advancements and applications in transdermal drug delivery systems

Transdermal drug delivery systems are skin-through drug delivery systems. They offer several advantages over conventional oral and parenteral routes, such as improved patient compliance, reduced side effects , controlled drug release , and prolonged therapeutic effects. These systems typically comprise a drug reservoir, a membrane, and an adhesive layer, which facilitate the controlled drug release through the skin into the bloodstream. The mechanism of transdermal drug delivery primarily relies on passive diffusion, driven by the concentration gradient of the drug across the skin layers. Recent advancements in transdermal drug delivery systems have expanded their applicability and efficacy. Nanostructured drug carriers, such as lipid nanoparticles and microneedles, have been developed to enhance the permeation of drugs with poor solubility and high molecular weight. Additionally, the use of permeation enhancers , iontophoresis , and sonophoresis has enabled improved drug delivery rates. Innovative transdermal patches and wearable devices have been designed to facilitate continuous monitoring and controlled release of drugs, which is particularly useful in chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Despite the numerous advantages of transdermal drug delivery, several challenges need to be addressed, such as skin permeability and safety concerns. In transdermal drug delivery systems include the incorporation of smart technologies, such as sensors and microcontrollers, for real-time monitoring and personalized drug delivery. The development of biocompatible and biodegradable materials for transdermal patches will further reduce environmental impact and enhance patient comfort.
