Fașancul in the Danube Gorge – the celebration of the masks – a tradition that will not be lost
It can be said that folklore represents an “arch over time”, a bridge, an indestructible link between what was and what will remain as a legacy to posterity. That is why, in the present work, we analyze a tradition specific to the area of the Danube Gorge – Fășancul/ Fărșangul – a celebration of masks, known in folklore as “carnival”. It has a wide sphere of circulation, both on the northern bank of the Danube Gorge, and in Serbia, in localities on the southern bank of the river. This tradition – the “masked procession” – has the role of satirizing certain bad aspects of human life and, just like in the fairy tale world, it marks the triumph of good over evil, life over death, light over darkness.
