Saraiva, Cotegipe e a lei dos sexagenários
The present article aims at analyzing the illustrations of the nineteenth century illustrated press from Rio de Janeiro that approached the management of two Presidents of the Council of Ministers of the empire of Brazil. The first one, José Antônio Saraiva, a politician linked to the Liberal Party, ruled between the months of May and August of 1885. The second, his successor, João Maurício Wanderley, the Baron of Cotegipe, of the Conservative Party, holder of the position between August 1885 and March 1888. The research was carried out in two journals: O Mequetrefe and the Revista Illustrada, which approach the presidencies based on the production of humorous images and criticisms, notably about the Law of the Sexagenarians.
