The other side of the water mirror

The article focuses on the variations of dark water in literature, being a deep symbol in the exploration of the subconscious, the danger of the unknown, purification and rebirth, unresolved mysteries and secrets, isolation and introspection. We will explore in communication both examples and motifs from Romanian and universal literature (the complex of Narcissus, the complex of Ophelia – of death in the water). We will refer to the novel „Isabel și apele Diavolului” ("Isabel and the Devil’s Waters") by Mircea Eliade, „Adâncuri incolore” ("Colorless Depths") by Alexandru Popescu, but also the novel "The Devil and the Dark Water" by Stuart Turton. Popular superstitions associate the negativism of water with various adjectives: cloudy, deep, smooth, quiet, exposing the danger of seduction and mystery of water (as a negative element).
