George Călinescu: a „decadent aristocrat” of the Romanian culture
Aristocracy and aristocratism in G. Călinescu`s vision transcend the quasiburlesque realism and the preciousness of descriptions that he exploits in his position as a novelist. The presentation and critique of an aristocracy in decline goes beyond the novelistic thematic exploitation and become literary procedures aesthetically and culturally cryptographed. The worlds of the aristocracy are not only reconstituted in the Calinescian realist fresco of a Balzacian and modernist nature, but also represent forms that are in fact reflected in the personality of G. Calinescu, and in his entire oeuvre on different levels: critical, aesthetic, cultural, ideological etc. Thus, realizing an extrapolation of the writings by G. Călinescu and of the writings about G. Călinescu on some fundamental historical and literary concepts, we are trying to extract a theory of the genius, namely a scientific and literary model, an aristocratic cultural model, a cultural model of Călinescu applicable to our erratic realities.
