The archaeological site of Qusair Amra as one of the outstanding Umayyad palaces
The Umayyad period represents one of the most prosperous periods in Jordan's history. However, most of the research has long been focused on the luxurious palace architecture. The article describes the Qusair Amr Palace, which occupied a prominent place in the history of the study of early Islamic antiquities. The palace was built on the territory of modern Jordan, 85 km east of the capital city of Amman, in the VII–VIII centuries AD during the Umayyad era, which can be called one of the most prosperous periods in the history of Jordan. The purpose of the study is to present the Qusair Amr Palace in terms of its architectural and artistic heritage, as well as the archaeological value of this historical site. The archaeological monuments of the Palace include frescoes of the Reception Hall and on the walls of the corridors, as well as the eastern portico, the throne room, the water wheel and the bath complex, where the largest number of wall paintings from the early Islamic period have been preserved. Materials and methods. The study was carried out on the basis of historical data on the excavations conducted by archaeologist Moselle at the site of the palace for more than 12 seasons from 1898 to 1911, the results of these excavations were consistently published in Jordanian Antiquities of the same period. A descriptive and analytical approach was chosen as the methodology of this study to collect information about the architectural elements of this palace. Result. The exceptional beauty of palace art, especially mosaic paintings, scenes and decorations, attracted the attention of researchers, especially those who study Islamic antiquities, and during the Jordanian administration, extensive restoration work was carried out at the Jordanian Museum of Antiquities. The historical significance of the palace is emphasized by its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
