Christ or the Antichrist: the Image of Ramon Cabrera in the Spanish Historical and Literary Tradition of the 1840s

The article is devoted to the formation of the image of Ramon Cabrera (1806–1877), one of the Carlist leaders in Spain in the 19th century. The Carlist movement, whose history began in 1833, opposed the liberal transformations in Spain and played an important role on the Spanish political scene throughout the XIX and the first half of the XX century. Cabrera joined the movement during the First Carlist War (1833–1840) and led the forces of Don Carlos' supporters in the Maestrazgo region. An attempt is made to trace the birth of the "pink" and "black" legends about Cabrera. The material for the study was two books published in Spain in the 1840s and became the basis for further interpretations of the image of the commander: "The Political and Military Life of Cabrera" (1844) by B. de Cordova and "The Tiger of Maestro, or From recruit to General" (1846– 1848) by V. Aiguals de Isco. In the last few years, a number of works have been published with historical and linguistic analysis of these works; in this article, books about Cabrera are considered from the standpoint of literary criticism. The use of the biblical intertext, as well as lexical units related to the lexico-semantic field "religion" in describing Cabrera in the analyzed works is shown. It is concluded that B. de Cordova, drawing an idealized image of the commander, compares Cabrera with Christ. An analysis of the description of the dinner at Cabrera's headquarters on the eve of the Battle of Maella (1838) is carried out. This fragment of the text is compared with the narrative of the Last Supper in the Gospel. V. Aiguals de Isco creates a negative image of Cabrera. In the "history-novel" by V. Aigualsa de Isco uses a number of lexemes in relation to the character, semantically related to the idea of the Antichrist. The article examines the Christmas scenes in the "Tiger Maestro": the episode with the birth of the main antihero and the juxtaposition of an already adult Cabrera and all Christians during the Christmas holidays. The article can serve as a basis for further study of the models of representation of Spanish Carlism and the use of religious motives in political discourse.
