Harlequinade grotesque in Anglo-American espionage prose of the XX century
The purpose of this article is to identify the features of the harlequinade grotesque in Anglo– American spy prose of the XX century. The relevance of the article is due to the stable interest in foreign literary studies in the influence of the aesthetics of the Italian comedy of masks on European and American literature. The object of the study is the works of Anglo–American espionage prose (the stories "Somewhere in France" by Davis, "Bruce-Partington Drawings" by Doyle and the novel "Spy, Get Out" by Le Carré), and the subject is the peculiarity of the harlequinade grotesque in them. The research methodology consists of an intertextual approach and a comparative historical method. The article reveals for the first time the presence of references in these works to the aesthetics of the comedy of masks, and also puts forward a hypothesis about the reasons for referring to it. The author of the article proves that the prototypes of the main characters in the works under consideration are Pierrot, Columbine, Harlequin and Pulcinella. It is established that the main functions of the harlequinade grotesque in espionage prose are: 1) rethinking traditional ideas about what a fighter against "evil" should be like; 2) bringing the described events into a timeless plan in which the characters turn into archetypes, and a separate story about the capture of a spy is transformed into a philosophical reflection on the causes of betrayal and the possibility of justice; 3) reducing the degree of tension in the narrative; 4) exposing the true essence of the character, his inner "core"; 5) the realization of the metaphor of the world as the theater. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the unexplored phenomenon of the influence of the comedy of masks on English spy prose and the absence of works devoted to the harlequinade grotesque in it. The results of the research can be used in lectures and seminars on English literature of the XX century.
