EMI Risk Management: Leveraging EMC Assurance Cases and the Goal Structuring Notation for Effective Shielding

Over the past few decades, there has been a noticeable increase in electromagnetic interference issues. Historically, assurance cases have been used effectively to demonstrate risk reduction, hazard mitigation and compliance to, e.g., safety requirements. However, despite the critical role of electromagnetic shielding in protecting sensitive electronic devices, no such assurance case has been put forth in this specific domain. Therefore, in this paper, we delve into electromagnetic compatibility assurance cases based on the goal structuring notation, with a specific focus on assuring effective shielding at both the component and enclosure levels. The primary objective is to present a compelling argument for why and how the system achieves sufficient shielding to mitigate identified electromagnetic interference risks in harsh electromagnetic environments. The proposed assurance case pattern establishes the necessary confidence in the applied shielding techniques throughout the system’s life cycle. By emphasizing the effective implementation of electromagnetic compatibility risk management strategies and the utilization of best practices in shielding design, this assurance pattern contributes to robust and reliable system performance.
