Electromagnetic Rotor Design of a Hybrid-excited PMSM for Automotive Applications

This paper deals with the electromagnetic design of the hybrid-excited rotor for a given stator of existing permanent magnet synchronous motor. The design is intended as an alternative to standard synchronous motors with rare-earth materials. Dimensional restrictions for the design, such as radius and axial length, are given by the existing stator. The topology selection is influenced also by the manufacturing possibility at the university. The design is analyzed using 2D finite element method with respect to torque ripple minimization and total torque maximization. The presented results are for varying DC and AC currents with the goal of identifying maximum DC current rating of the machine. Mechanical and thermal analyses are excluded and will be the subject of investigation in the following work.
