Comparative Performance Analysis of 21700-Type Cylindrical and Pouch Nickel Manganese Cobalt Battery Cells for Electric Vehicle Applications

This paper presents a comparative analysis between the Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistry-based 21700 cylindrical and pouch battery cells for Electric Vehicle (EV) applications. The sized battery is seamlessly integrated into the traction chain of the EV and exposed to rigorous testing scenarios to evaluate its performance against predetermined benchmarks. Moreover, a nonlinear robust control approach, synergetic control scheme, is proposed to control the speed of the EV. The presented simulation results indicate the superior performance of the 21700 cylindrical NMC cells over the pouch ones across various metrics, including energy capacity, cost-effectiveness, and compactness. Moreover, the integrated battery system demonstrates its high efficiency in supplying power and energy to the traction chain of the EV. The synergetic control mechanism showcases commendable static and dynamic performance during both acceleration and deceleration phases, thereby underscoring its suitability for EV applications.
