Comparative Evaluation of a DAB Converter and SRC for DC Buildings Application

Dual-active bridge (DAB) and series-resonant converters (SRC) are among the most popular isolated dc-dc topologies for various industrial applications, including data centers, power supply units, and battery energy storage systems. The choice between these options is highly application-specific, driven by standards and design requirements. However, for emerging applications such as dc buildings, there is a lack of standardization, and design requirements are still under discussion. In this paper, the SRC and DAB converters are compared and evaluated with a focus on this new target application. The proposed comparison examines different design requirements, including the soft-switching range, power losses, processed RMS current, effective operation area, and more. Additionally, experimental results are presented for both topologies based on a 5-kW prototype.
