Separating Sections of a Research Facility to Minimize the Spread of EMI

Earthing in an industrial context is normally split into Protective Earthing and Protective Bonding for safety reasons and Functional Bonding where needed to prevent the spread of EMI. This paper investigates how a situation can be handled where it is not possible to fully use this approach in a large facility. Following the traditional pattern would mean introducing unwanted galvanic paths for possible spread of EMI. Therefore a new take on the earthing system is needed and safety has to be addressed in a novel fashion.

Abstract

Earthing in an industrial context is normally split into Protective Earthing and Protective Bonding for safety reasons and Functional Bonding where needed to prevent the spread of EMI. This paper investigates how a situation can be handled where it is not possible to fully use this approach in a large facility. Following the traditional pattern would mean introducing unwanted galvanic paths for possible spread of EMI. Therefore a new take on the earthing system is needed and safety has to be addressed in a novel fashion.
