Past, Present, and Future of LGBTIQ Tourism Literature: A Systematic Literature Review

This study conducts a systematic review of the current scientific research framework on LGBTIQ tourism and suggests new directions for its evolution. Through bibliometric analysis, content analysis, and systematic quantitative literature review, 146 articles from WoS and Scopus databases (1993–2023) were examined. Five research areas were identified: gay male sexual behaviors on holidays, discriminatory activities and attitudes, LGBT tourists’ identities, LGBTQIA events, and LGBTQ spaces. Existing literature mainly focuses on demand dynamics, specifically on gay tourists, their profiles, motivations, and experiences of discrimination. The article proposes future research directions to broaden and deepen the field of LGBTIQ tourism studies.
