Abstract

The article is devoted to the role of the subject Olympiad in pediatrics as an effective method of teaching highly motivated students and describes a 10-year experience of the Ryazan State Medical University in this field. The goals, dynamics of development of the Olympiad movement, achievements and prospects for further development are presented. The main goals of holding Olympiads at universities are the implementation of practical skills, general cultural competencies of students, identification of students' creative abilities, independent thinking, motivation to deepen and expand knowledge in the relevant discipline. Extracurricular work with a teacher, the development of communication skills, the ability and willingness to take responsibility in making and implementing decisions in team cooperation represent the educational aspects of such competitions. Intra-university Olympiads are a launching pad for subsequent participation in all-Russian and international competitions; they increase the rating of the university and departments, especially when receiving prizes. The process of developing test, creative and clinical tasks for any Olympiad requires the efforts of the teaching staff of the departments, contributing to pedagogical improvement and the skill of mentors. Teachers, by creating various forms of conducting Olympiads, deepening the content and complexity of tasks, bringing them into line with current educational standards, increase the efficiency of the pedagogical process as a whole and their own professional level.
