Transforming Agriculture with IoT: A Comprehensive Framework Using Raspberry Pi and ROS
Integrating IoT (Internet of Things) in agriculture represents a significant advancement in modernizing and optimizing farming practices. Historically, agriculture has evolved from manual labor and animal-powered farming to mechanized equipment and the Green Revolution, which introduced high-yield crop varieties and chemical fertilizers. Despite these advancements, modern agriculture faces critical challenges such as inefficient resource utilization, significant environmental impacts, and the need for sustainable practices. This paper addresses these issues by proposing a comprehensive IoT framework designed to enhance agricultural productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. The project implements Raspberry Pi with the ROS (Robot Operating System) framework, utilizing various sensors like moisture, temperature, and salinity sensors to collect real-time data. Additionally, the system incorporates a smart fencing system with camera-based movement detection and a smart irrigation system designed to optimize water usage and minimize waste. Leveraging this network of interconnected sensors and cloud-based analytics, the system facilitates real-time monitoring and management of critical agricultural parameters, enabling data-driven decision-making, optimized resource utilization, and improved crop yields. The system’s scalability and adaptability ensure its applicability across diverse agricultural settings, from small-scale farms to large commercial operations. This paper presents the system architecture, hardware and software components, and field deployment results, demonstrating how smart IoT systems can effectively address existing agricultural challenges and transform traditional farming practices.
