Innovative Approaches in Road Condition Monitoring: Synergizing Mobile Mapping Systems and High-Resolution Data Analytics

Modern road networks present significant challenges that demand innovative monitoring solutions. This study introduces an advanced methodology that merges Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) with state-of-the-art data analytics to achieve precise and efficient road surface evaluations. It utilizes high-resolution sensors, alongside the ViaPPS technology, which employs tools like the Z+F 9012 A laser scanner and the Ladybug 5+ camera, to capture detailed 3D point clouds and cross-sectional profiles. These allow for accurate identification of road features, including lane markings and surface irregularities. The study was conducted over a 59 km stretch of the Wardha-Butibori Package, yielding critical metrics such as an International Roughness Index (IRI) of 2.90 and a Mean Profile Depth (MPD) of 0.975. These results demonstrate the system’s ability to provide actionable insights for effective road management. The study also explores the challenges related to data handling, cost-efficiency, and the impact of environmental factors on measurement precision, suggesting pathways for further enhancement. This research underscores the significant potential of integrating ViaPPS with MMS in revolutionizing road infrastructure monitoring and sets the stage for future advancements in this field.
