Comparison of Formulation Methods for DAAF Based Composite Mixtures
Resonant acoustic mixing and traditional wet slurry formulation methods have been used to formulate a 3,3-diamino-4,4-azoxyfurazan based plastic bonded explosive to compare products achieved.Based on small angle x-ray scattering analysis, void size distributions were significantly different between the two methods. This difference allowed density differences to be noted in pressed parts.Detonation velocity measurements linking void fraction to performance were analyzed using cylinder expansion tests, showing a slight increase in the detonation velocity for the material with higher pressed density and a marginally improved Jones-Wilkins-Lee equation of state parameters for the material that was formulated using resonant acoustic mixing.
