Prevalence and Identification of Nonfermentative Gram-negative Bacilli among Patients at Tertiary Care Hospital, Jaipur
wound infections. 4Nonfermentative gram-negative bacilli can lead to a broad range of infections and make up about 15% of the GNB isolated from clinical cultures. 5 IntroductIonNonfermentative gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) include a diverse range of aerobic, nonspore-forming bacteria that either do not ferment glucose or utilize it oxidatively. They constitute approximately one-fifth of all gram-negative bacilli (GNB). 1 NFGNB are commonly present in natural environments like soil and water as saprophytes and are also normal inhabitants of the human body and other animals.Despite often being found incidentally, their significance as pathogens has grown due to extensive antibiotic use and the growing number of patients with weakened immune systems.NFGNB are now recognized as significant agents of opportunistic and often serious infections, including nosocomial infections. 2 These pathogens are frequently found in patients with severe underlying conditions, including those with extensive use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, prolonged surgeries, long hospitalizations, insufficient mechanical ventilation and tracheotomy, genitourinary procedures, burn injuries, or are of low birth weight. These pathogens are also frequently found in neonates, children, and the elderly. 3NFGNB are also commonly associated with conditions like septicemia, meningitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infection (UTI), and postsurgical
