Abstract Traditional automation technologies cannot fully exploit the possibilities of digitalization. Software-defined production represents a way out. Here, the rigid automation pyramid is dissolved and replaced by networked services. This not only makes production in the manufacturing and process industries more flexible and efficient, but also enables, for example, the meaningful use of AI and the exploitation of sustainability potentials. This article uses examples to describe possibilities and potentials of implementing software-defined production.
