Photovoltaic Water Storage Monitoring for Plant Irrigation System using IoT
Hurricanes Irma and Maria struck Puerto Rico in September 2017, causing a humanitarian crisis and severe infrastructure damage. They left much of the population without essential services like electricity and potable water for extended periods. In response, the population adopted sustainable alternatives, such as rainwater collection and filtration systems. This paper describes a system designed to self-store water and use it for irrigating crops, monitored via an Internet of Things (IoT) system that sends data to the cloud for user access. The system is fully automatic and aims to minimize dependence on the public utility company (AAA). The project employs embedded systems for control, using sensors, microcontrollers, and Arduinos that connect to each other and the cloud. To address Puerto Rico’s power grid issues, the system is powered by solar energy, making it largely independent of the country’s electricity company (AEE). The IoT implementation enhances the automated user experience.
