ConSUMO: Simulation-based tool to evaluate mobile traffic impact on cell towers load
Due to the rapid proliferation of mobile devices and the integration of advanced communication technologies into vehicular systems, the development of traffic simulation tools is becoming increasingly important in order to help network operators predict and manage mobile service requests load and support informed investment decisions by understanding urban development impacts on cellular network infrastructure. While there exist complex tools that can accurately replicate the details of a real scenario (e.g. Veins frameworks), we have found a lack of more simple and basic tools. Such programs can be useful not only for newcomers to get acquainted with the tools required to perform network analysis but also for more experienced researchers to get a rough estimation before using more onerous methods. We propose ConSUMO, a tool that exploits publicly available data on cellular towers positions and simulations on urban vehicular traffic. It is based on the open-source SUMO simulator and is publicly available on a GitHub repository along with instructions on its use and an example of analysis based on real data.
