Development of an Autonomous Solar Charging System for Electric Vehicles with Self-Consumption in Puerto Rico
This project presents the development of an autonomous solar charging system for electric vehicles (EVs) in Puerto Rico, designed to operate through net metering, self-consumption, or off-grid functionality. The system aims to address the challenges of limited EV charging infrastructure and the island’s reliance on fossil fuels. By integrating solar panels and storage batteries, the project seeks to provide a comprehensive and sustainable solution for EV charging, promoting the adoption of EVs and supporting Puerto Rico’s transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050, as mandated by the Puerto Rico Public Energy Policy Act of 2019. The system is designed to be scalable, reliable, and suitable for various locations, including those with limited grid access. Through analysis and simulation, the research demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed system, estimating its potential energy production and charging capacity under different conditions. This project contributes to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels in the transportation sector.
