APPLICATION OF GAMMA DISTRIBUTION TO MODELING THE TWO-POINT BENDING OF A MULTILAYER ROD

In this paper, a statistical analysis of the results from an experiment involving the two-point bending of a multi-layer rod using an optical fiber with specific parameters was conducted. Each parameter of the model was evaluated three times three times using method of least squares, method of moments, and maximum likelihood estimations. The hypothesis proposed in previous studies about the supremacy of the Weibull distribution for explaining the results of this experiment was refuted. Instead, the gamma distribution was found to be a suitable option too, as it significantly reduces the overall variance in the distribution when maximum likelihood estimates are used.

Abstract

In this paper, a statistical analysis of the results from an experiment involving the two-point bending of a multi-layer rod using an optical fiber with specific parameters was conducted. Each parameter of the model was evaluated three times three times using method of least squares, method of moments, and maximum likelihood estimations. The hypothesis proposed in previous studies about the supremacy of the Weibull distribution for explaining the results of this experiment was refuted. Instead, the gamma distribution was found to be a suitable option too, as it significantly reduces the overall variance in the distribution when maximum likelihood estimates are used.
