Stepwise Approach In Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Interpretation Using Novel Acid Base Balance Theory
INTRODUCTION: Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) interpretation plays an immense role in critical care medicine yet its interpretation remains a challenging task. A novel acid base balance theory and newer approach in ABG interpretation was proposed and explained in detail by Rajini Samuel (current author) in the previous research articles. AIM: The aim of the current research study is to develop a 7 stepwise approach in ABG interpretation using novel acid base balance theory. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Novel ABG interpretation method using changes in pH (Total, Respiratory and Non-respiratory), newer 4 quadrant graphical tool and a derived relation correlating various acid base parameters were employed to formulate a stepwise approach in ABG interpretation. RESULTS: The novel pH based interpretation method, diagrammatic representation in 4 quadrant graphical tool and methods to identify the hidden and mixed acid base disorders were tabulated and depicted in figures. CONCLUSION: The implementation of these 7 stepwise approach in ABG interpretation by developing a mobile application or upgrading the software in the ABG analyzer itself will help the junior medical staffs in critical situations to make an immediate and appropriate decision in the management of life threatening patients.
