STUDY AND DIAGNOSIS OF THE CURRENT CONDITION OF THE STATUE OF AMENHOTEP III IN THE GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM

[EN] This research paper aims to study and diagnose the current condition of the statue of Amenhotep III in the Grand Egyptian Museum, using modern techniques to identify its components and manifestations of deterioration to determine the nature of the statue’s material properties. Then, it determines their causes, sources, and appropriate materials to treat. The study documented the statue using three-dimensional laser scanning technology and examined some samples using an optical microscope, polarizing microscope, and scanning electron microscope attached to an element analysis unit. It also utilized X-ray diffraction analysis and infrared spectroscopy to identify the nature and quality of the adhesive material used in a previous restoration of the statue. Tests and analyses showed the presence of quartz as a primary material and a small percentage of hematite, a weak and widespread granular disintegration. Moreover, the old adhesive material was identical to the adhesive material marble [Colla]. Based on the results, an appropriate future treatment plan for the statue has been prepared.
