Enhancing Prosthetic Accessibility in Vietnam: A Novel Digital Design Process for Amputation Sockets
Prosthetic limbs are vital devices that significantly enhance the quality of life for amputees by restoring mobility and independence. Despite their importance, the availability of prosthetic devices in Vietnam, a low-middle income country, remains alarmingly limited, with only a small percentage of patients having access to these essential aids at orthopedic centers or hospitals. This situation underscores a critical need for developing affordable prosthetic solutions to serve the large population of individuals with lower limb disabilities. At the core of a prosthetic limb’s effectiveness is the socket, a component that must be precisely designed for both comfort and functionality. This paper introduces a novel approach to designing prosthetic sockets using advanced digital technologies, laying the groundwork for cost-effective manufacturing and broad accessibility. This approach not only aims to transform the prosthetic landscape in Vietnam but also sets the stage for future advancements in the field.
